January 6, 2017
As people start looking towards the new year it’s a notorious time for resolutions, often made with the best of intentions. The number of those resolutions that actually get resolved? That’s usually another story! Similarly getting your will in place, let alone considering Lasting Powers of Attorney is something everyone vows they will do… later.
There is of course one thing that everyone needs to consider and in my opinion one of the things 2016 seems to have taught us via what feels like a huge number of celebrity deaths, is that none of us are immortal. Not even David Bowie. Leonard Cohen spoke to reporters in one of the last interviews before his death to say that ensuring his estate planning was in place and settled before he died was incredibly important to him.
So in this respect what I would challenge everyone to do is make one decision, which is to put one thing in place in January to start the ball rolling. We all know there’s no point making a resolution that isn’t achievable because that will just make January that bit more depressing! Instead, why not get your will in place so you know your children will be protected? Why not get your Lasting Powers of Attorney in place so that if, at the countdown, a rogue champagne cork lands you in a coma someone can take over your affairs until you are well again?
While legacy planning can seem like a scary subject it’s actually doing something proactive and positive NOW so that you and your loved ones can have a more secure future. If that isn’t a brilliant resolution then I don’t know what is!
